Environmental accessibility assessment

Carry environmental accessibility assessments in schools and public institutions to ensure the accessibility standards are taken into consideration regarding individuals who are blind or with low vision. Suggestions and advise provided based on the outcomes.

Networking with city planners, transportation departments and engineers in ensuring the navigation needs of Individuals who are blind or with visual impairment are taken into consideration.

It is important to note that vision loss affects individuals and their families greatly. It takes time to adjust to the new you with vision in play. As one goes through these adjustments and getting back to his or her adapted life, it is our desire that such individuals do not face barriers to accessing places of interest in the outside world.


Contribute to Research

Application of up-to-date data on O&M including publications by Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness (JVIB)

Contribution to the body of knowledge through descriptive naturalistic observations.

Work in regulation with Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) , Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) and Vocational Rehabilitation Association Canada (VRAC).

We are open to discussing relevant resources with organizations and institutions interested in our services regardless of geographical area.


Who will Benefit?

Individuals who are blind or have some degree of vision loss that interferes with their daily travel needs across all ages.
Families, friends and stakeholders of individuals identified in homes, schools and institutions that uphold accommodation standards for their members with vision loss.
Individuals with additional impairment and vision loss being an addition to limiting their functional mobility performance.


Referrals

Individuals may be recommended for O&M training by ophthalmologists or other service providers who believe it is appropriate for the person's needs. Organizations can also refer individuals for training in preparation for job placement. Employers from diverse organizations have the option to refer their employees for O&M training in order to accommodate their job requirements. Schools can enter into contracts to ensure mobility training is offered to children at various educational levels. Services can also be provided to groups and families who may benefit from training that assists individuals who are blind or have vision loss. Referrals from Veterans Affairs are accepted to ensure necessary services are provided to veterans in need.
